Egyptian Hawawshi (Crispy Meat Filled Bread Pockets)

-Pyaz (Onion) 2 medium

-Shimla mirch (Capsicum) 2 medium

-Lehsan (Garlic) cloves 2-3

-Hari mirch (Green chillies) 5-6

-Fresh parsley handful substitute: Fresh coriander

-Tomato paste 2 tbs

-Namak (Salt) 1 tsp or to taste

-Beef qeema (Mince) ½ kg

-Paprika powder 1 tsp

-Zeera powder (Cumin powder) 1 tsp

-Elaichi powder (Cardamom powder) ½ tsp

-Darchini powder (Cinnamon powder) ¼ tsp

-Dhania powder (Coriander powder) 1 tsp

-Allspice powder 1 tsp

-Lal mirch powder (Red chilli powder) 1 tsp or to taste

-Cooking oil 2 tsp

-Pita bread as required

Prepare Yogurt Sauce:

-Dahi (Yogurt) 1 Cup

-Kheera (Cucumber) grated ½ Cup

-Lehsan (Garlic) chopped 1 tbs

-Namak (Salt) ½ tsp or to taste

-Kali mirch powder (Black pepper powder) ¼ tsp



-In a chopper,add onion,capsicum,garlic,green chillies,fresh parsley & chop coarsely.

-On a bowl,place strainer & transfer chopped mixture on it & strain excess water.

-In a bowl,add strained vegetables,tomato paste,salt,beef mince & mix well.

-Add paprika powder,cumin powder,cardamom powder,cinnamon powder,coriander powder, allspice powder,red chilli powder,cooking oil,mix until well combined & marinate for 2 hours.

-Cut pita bread into two halves & make a pocket in it with the help of knife.

-Fill pita bread with prepared beef filling (makes 10-12).

-On greased baking tray lined with butter paper,place stuffed pita bread & brush with cooking oil.

Option # 1: Baking

-Bake in preheated oven at 160C for 30-35 minutes.

Option # 2: Air fry

-Air fry in preheated air fryer at 160C for 20 minutes.

Prepare Yogurt Sauce:

-In a bowl,add yogurt,cucumber,garlic,salt,black pepper powder & mix well.

-Serve Hawawshi with prepared yogurt sauce!
